Project cycle terms

Different types of terminology have been used to refer to evaluative exercises that take place at different points in the project/programme cycle.

Stages and exercises in the cycle:

StageEvaluative exercise Description
DesignAppraisal                                       An evaluation of how likely it will be for the design to achieve the purpose. It is usually conducted by people not involved in the original design process
ImplementationMonitoringRegular checks by those closely involved in the management of the intervention, to ensure inputs and general progress is according to plan
Mid-termMid-term reviewThis review usually involves an external assessment of whether the intervention is likely to achieve the effects intended. It looks beyond inputs to consider whether the outputs will be achieved, and makes remedial recommendations.
Completion                             End reviewThis review looks holistically at what has happened as a result of the intervention and asks why? and how? so that the lessons can be learned.
Some years afterwardsEx-post evaluationThis review takes a more objective view of achievements, assessing issues of long-term impact and sustainability. It tries to account for success or failure and disseminates the lessons
