A variety of concepts and terminology are used to define evaluation and performance assessment within the international development sector. People often understand these concepts and terms in subtly different ways, with international development agencies frequently using their own specialist terms.

Four key terms

There are four key terms for four key concepts: Monitoring, Evaluation, Impact Assessment and Performance Assessment. These are complementary but distinct concepts.
